I just added some of my favorite quotations from WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau to my daughter's blog because she writes about slowing herself down enough to really listen to the people of Haiti and learn from them. She also writes about "Haiti time" and the deep breath Americans need to take before frustration wrecks their spiritual well-being.
These lines from Thoreau speak to the same need for all of us to slow down!...don't hurry...don't fritter away the gorgeous, spectacular, tranquil, rich moment that is NOW.
Just before shutting down the computer in my classroom, the slanting sunlight bolted past the window glass and lit up the frames of my glasses. I thought of our supper plans with our dear friends tonight, and I started singing a noodly old 1960's hippie tune that mirrored exactly what Thoreau advised. Lyrics follow:
Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.
Ba da, Ba da, Ba da, Ba da...Feelin' Groovy.
Hello lamp-post,
What cha knowin'?
I've come to watch your flowers growin'.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo,
Feelin' groovy.
I've got no deeds to do,
No promises to keep.
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you,
All is groovy.
